Jaunt Around The Block

Snomontagep
Hello. Here we are continuing our day in Snohomish, Washington.

By two o'clock, the sun's rays were intense. We left the antique shops and took a quick jaunt through the residential district. Quite, tree-lined streets offer a variety of architectural style homes. Unfortunately, we were pressed for time due to other plans slated for Seattle. So it was walking and shooting quickly.

We ventured around what was to be a mere three block radius. All the while I tried my best to be as discreet as possible when taking photographs. Arriving at one corner of a street, we discovered something extraordinary. It was one of the most magnificent trees I'd seen in a long time. Wish you could experience in person. (See photo above. There is a boy in the background who swings from a rope swing hanging from one of the tree's massive branches). Immense and absolutely gorgeous. Leaves overhanging the sidewalk, I touched their soft supple textures. The desire to lie beneath the cool green canopy was tempting. For some reason this tree recalled to mind my teen years in California. There was something familiar yet mysterious about it.

This gift of wonder grows on the property where the historic Judge W.P. Bell home (seen in photo above) resides. The current owner was in the front yard with her children. I politely asked what type of tree and how old. And she replied, "It's a chestnut. Probably planted in the early 1900's." And then she proceeded with a curt attitude, "I don't appreciate people always asking questions about it." Hmn, I got the hint. Granted, she was probably tired having to tend to several children and preparing to mow the front lawn. Walking onward I thought to myself that perhaps it might be a good idea if she placed a small sign near the tree telling it's age and other pertinent information. Brilliant! No more people bothering her.

Minor incident, I continued taking photographs of more subjects. Yet doing so caused a particular distraction. It was across the street a few houses down from the Judge's home. Behold the couple who stood staring at us through their living room window. The man appeared large. He stood firmly with his fists on his hips as if an angry parent ready to discipline a child. And myself with camera in hand, felt very uneasy as if I were paparazzi come to invade the neighborhood. Rather then celebrities, I admittedly was in pursuit of houses. Understandably people get suspicious. Or perhaps I was just being paranoid. It reminded me of an incident I encountered a few years ago while creating paintings outdoors. But that's a story told on my other blog. Anyway, photo venture grew unnerving. Although in the end, results were worth it.

Vintage Snohomish

On my birthday, my husband and I visited Snohomish, Washington. The area is known as the Antique Capital of the Northwest. One could spend hours and hours browsing the menagerie of eclectic antique shops dotting the historic downtown district. Below are a montage of photographs I took while wandering through two of my favorite stores.

Anniemontage2
Annie's On First opened in early May. Exceptional French and Cottage Chic! Delightfully filled with a mix of vintage home furnishings and garden accessories. Would love to own the dress-form! Unfortunately, I had spent too much money on other items from different stores just hours earlier! To see more of my photographs featuring Annie's two stores, click HERE . And click HERE to visit Annie's new blog.

Annbookends_2

Vintage bookends I purchased a few months ago at Annie's other store located on Second Street. These are displayed in my office which hold several antique books set upon my bookshelf. Also, another fantastic store always worth visiting on first street owned by Deborah Gordon is called Queen Bee. Really amazing! Be sure to tour Deborah's beautiful home and gardens.

Next post will feature some Victorian and early 1900's homes in Snohomish!

Learning To Relax Week

Hello. All deadlines except for one are finished. Now I can finally tell myself to relax the rest of this week. Suffice it to say, too soon and more deadlines will appear. So until then, here's what I'm doing.

Katherine_3
 'Katherine'

What I'm Creating...

Above is a watercolor and charcoal picture I just finished. It's more a preliminary to what will become a larger casein painting. Katherine has been temporarily given a freshly-painted (milk paint) decorative frame. Curious as to how she would look in a frame. Also finished several works featuring people's faces from an old 1934 school-year album. You'll see them eventually. Will be available as prints.

What I'm Reading...

Elements

Tonight, I'll relax and read The Elements Of Style. Of course I've read previous editions in college. But this newest illustrated edition is fantastic. Flipping pages, illustrations are unique and inspiring to say the least. Oh my, I do admire illustrator Maira Kalman. Yes indeed. Can't wait to really sink into this one.

What I'm Listening to...

Forever

Yesterday, received in my mailbox the masterful 1960s band LOVE "Forever Changes" CD. Arthur Lee (turn up the volume) and his band were incredible! Been listening for hours in my studio. Granted, has taken a while to get used to some songs. Anyway, the US premiere film about Love will be showing in Hollywood, California this month. The DVD will be available on July 29th. Meanwhile via email newsletter, discovered phenomenal soul/r&b James Hunter (turn up the volume) has a new second album release 'The Hard Way'. Love this guy. Just ordered it. Do you have his first album 'People Gonna Talk'? Highly recommendable.

What  I'm Guilty Of...

Cakedouble

O.K. I confess. Guilty pleasures run amok. Two slices of chocolate cake. One last night and another the day before. My husband and a friend helped themselves to the rest. But no worries really. I make up for this occasional indulgence with everyday exercise and yoga.

Well, just thought I'd have a fun post. I'll be celebrating my birthday June 22nd! Oh dear, could this be yet another cake? See you again next week. Perhaps just artwork.

Cheers!

P.S. Thank you so much Todd for your wonderful help regarding FTP problems. Finally resorted to Fetch. Everything worked like a charm.

That's it for now regarding showcasing any more mural projects. Next post will be small artwork I'm currently working on geared for selling as prints. Meanwhile, very busy creating art for several clients; products to showcase at impending website for Junes Melange store - which launch date keeps becoming pushed back at a later date. My original intention was to launch in Spring. Looks as if not ready until fall. Far too many other things coming up this summer. Nevertheless, in addition, have a very important deadline to meet concerning a particular magazine. I'll discuss this at a later date.

Until next time . . . Cheers!

Mural Samples

Mockmuraltwo
Sample art for mock wall mural.

In case you haven't been following the last posts ... about eight years ago, my husband and myself owned a decorative painting business. Usually we worked strictly on producing specialized paint effects for residential homes. From simple colorwashing to the more challenging techniques such as aging plasterwork, crackle glazing, faux finishes and anything in-between. There were some clients who hired me to design and hand paint wall murals. The piece seen above including others were presented in my first portfolio shown to potential clientele. Later on, there were other portfolios which I'll show in the near future. Until then, click image below to view some more mural samples...

Inmuralsamples

Next post is that of on-site photographs featuring my very first client's home. Taking you inside, you'll get to view an originally designed and hand painted wall mural. It begins within entryway and leads to the top landing of their stairs. Stay tuned.

The Art Of Murals

Musamone

Mursamtwo

Hello. As promised, here begins a journey into my mural art. Nearly eight years ago while working as a decorative painter/muralist in partnership with my husband, whenever meeting with potential clients I'd present a portfolio filled with samples. This is one of several of those samples (see February 1st 'Inside the Studio' post for another one) which I'll first showcase before heading onward to photographs of actual job sites where several of my large murals reside. Please be patient for these due to vast amount of photographs needing to be sorted, scanned and edited in photoshop. Unfortunately, way back then I didn't own a digital camera! Suffice it to say, digital makes uploading so much faster and easier. Instead, this task is causing slow progress and occasional bouts of terrible procrastination. Meanwhile...

I'll try my best this week to answer all your emails and comments some of you have written lately. Apologize for delay and hope you haven't thought me rude for not replying. Very busy! So much to do regarding other works in progress including personal stuff needing utmost attention.

Until next time...

Alas, must return to my studio but beforehand, I would especially like to thank Shawn Stucker for mentioning my blog over at her fabulously elegant blog Country French Antiques. As I write this, she is leaving Kentucky on her way to Paris, France. Perhaps she is already there. Lucky her! Not only is Shawn's blog a delight to visit, so too her import store carrying French and European antiques. Absolutely fascinating items. Look forward to her return from lovely Paris.

Until next time, cheers everyone.

Reflection

Reflectionfull

Here is another of my hand painted floor-screens intended for Junes Melange shop. This four panel piece is titled "Reflection". Neoclassical in theme, my intention was to convey a place where one might imagine wandering within this garden... find quietude and time out of their busy days to stop and reflect. Hence the reflection pool in background. The two foreground statues give the impression they are more real then the two statues further in the distance. Midway while painting this, I felt a story unfolding. Something intriguing, mysterious is going to happen.

Reflectioncloseup
Closer view of the screen.

Painted with acrylics onto solid birch wood. Protected with matte varnish. Back side has cohesive pale cream color relative to front side imagery.

This screen including previous one, have required a vast amount of time and labor to create. Materials used are high quality.

Dimensions: 6' x 6' when fully opened.

FOR SALE If interested in purchasing, you can email me. Please, serious inquiries only. Thank You.

Stay tuned  for next post! Floor-screen depicting a Chinoiserie scene.
